My research focuses on the interaction of climate/climate change and biodiversity. This has been previously mainly forest ecosystem based – both in terms of how plant/forest distributions are determined by climate, and how land cover change (deforestation/land clearing), affects local and regional climate through changes to radiation budgets and hydrology. Since gaining my doctorate from Oxford University, commencing 2004, based on Amazonian lowland forests, I have worked on long-term forest ecology plots in the global Smithsonian Institute programme, and for the Earthwatch Regional Climate Centre Programme, which involved citizen scientists in the collection of ecological monitoring data.
Marine turtle ecology and biogeography and species distribution modelling are other areas of interest, as reflected in some of my current projects. These include: vegetation groups/tree SDM with Clive McAlpine at University of Queensland; green turtle vulnerability to climate change, with Mark Hamann and Mariana Fuentes at James Cook University, Townsville, and Megan Saunders, Global Change Institute, University of Queensland; tropical forest composition under projected future climates with Marcos Heil Costa at Universidade Federal de Viçosa, Brazil; citizen science data collection with Terhi Riutta, University of Oxford and Eleanor Slade, University of Helsinki.
